Mr. Peyton Ford called and stated that the Attorney
General had directed that he write a letter to S¢nator Tydings
based upon our memorandum reporting the results of a check we-.
made on State Department files; that the Attorney General, of-
course, wanted to help Tydings as much as possible and had out@
lined how the letter should be prepared; namely, limiting tt to
that material which we had furntshed to the State Department;
that Clive Palmer was with him and he wanted us to look at th
letter, ZI told him that we had our memorandum and any lette hey":
wanted to write was up to them, He atated he had a form he wu ed
to show to us and accordingly, Mrs Palmer brought the letter up,”
which was revtewed by Messrs. Laughlin, Johnson, Ladd and Nichols
The letter was brief, and potnts out that the Attorney
General hag requested the FBI to make an tnuestigation to determin
tf the State Department files were complete; that the FBI had made
such an tnuestigation; that the files were complete except in three.
instances. The letter also referred to Peyton Ford's letter to the
inventory of material we had furnished the Department and to Ford's
report that the files were complete. The three exceptions were as:

furnished orally on January 17, 1946, and
October 24, 1946. .
