So MEMORANDUM FOR MR. TOLSON - Pa
7 —— MR, LADD. fo tiny
MR. NICHOLS:
Mtr. Peyton Ford called and stated he had on ‘talliing to the &é Horney
General regarding the allegation that there wore elevely Communists in | the “State
Tepartvent in. 2 commented that cight were now out of the Department and three
~yerdined. Mr. Ford stated he had been requested to find out who these three were.
I told Mr. Ford ] did not know who thcy were and I assumed we would have to make
inquiry of the State Department. Ford then said he understood that McCarthy said
he was not going to give this information to the Committee and it was not exactly
clear what he was going to do with it; that he, McCarthy, had commented if anyone
should have it tol Met ar the FBI should have it. I then told Ford that of course I~
could ask Senater-‘ic Carthy but I doubted the wisdom of this, I also asked Ford if
McCarthy was still referring to the chart and Ford stated he epperently | was. iq
T thereupon informed Ford that this<art was 5 prepared 4 in the State De spert
mnent; that they have a chart exactly like McCarthy described and that it was pre-
pered from material received from all branches of the Government including the
Fl reports. I stated, however, that though I had not scen this chart it was actually
prepared by the State Department which would indicate that McCarthy was getting his
information out of that Department because no one else has suche chartinhis —
possession. I also told him that our material, which is included in the chart, ts not
" {dentificd as such and that they cannot tell us what is tn the chart that came from the
Bureau. Mr. Ford then advised me that McCarthy is stating that for the first time.
4n history the FBI is evaluating evidence and I stated I did not know what he based
thaton. I further stated that the State Department ia prepared to issue a press .
release that they have received no such document as described by McCarthy from
‘the FBL I commented that of course we eaid we could neither approve or disapprove
_ gny release; that it was up to them what they say. _However, I sald as to these fhe
names I could give McCarthy a call and ask him or f could try to secure this §
* geformation from the State Department. | Mr. Ford thought we should try, to find out
