sible were not identified or arrested.
On September 23, 1969, 188 Negroes, all high school
student age, were arrested at the Clarksdale High School, a a
white school, where they had assembled and marched to protest.

arrested after they were advised by local authorities that
their arrest would result if they trespassed on the school |
grounds. There was no violence during the incident.
Following the above incident, frequent marches were
‘held at Clarksdale sponsored by the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to protest the
segregated school system which operated on a district plan

and to protest the above arrests. |
A boycott of white businesses and picketing of the
downtown business area ag well as the businesses of the
members of the Clarksdale City School Board, was also insti-
tuted by the NAACP. Marches were held regularly on Saturdays
with as mary as 1,700 Negro participants. There were no acts
of violence during the marches, meetings or picketing.
