The "Washington Afro- American" dated 5/7/68, Washington, D.C., newspaper, reported that Wilkins, after a visit to the White House in early May, stated that he saw "no immediate danger of the whole colored American population going off on a violence kick." The following serials in the f a i Christian Leadership Conference" made reference to Roy Wilkins and Whitn Young, of the National Urban League, as being of the conservative Negro faction. Discussion among SCLC members disclosed that these two individ were.considered by President Johnson as his men which was just what they wanted, thus placing Martin Luther King, Jr., head of SCLC, in a less advantageous position. King differed somewhat in his ideas and seemingl had no desire to be identified with them. It did not appear that Wilkins endorsed the SCLC; on the occasion of a civil rights rally in Cleveland, Ohio, he failed to mention a forthcoming SCLC campaign.
