Since that time, however, he had endeavored to steer the NAACP from com- munist infiltration. During attempts to follow up the 8/28/63 March on Washington, D.C., Wilkins stepped in and prevented direct action programs. On 1/4/65, during his annual report at NAACP headquarters, NYC, Wilkins stated that the enactment of the Civil Ri ghta Act and achievement of voter registration were the highlights of the year, He indicated that concentrated efforts would be placed on the Anti- _ Poverty Act in the future. Wilkins was scheduled to speak at NAACP functions at Birmingham, Ala., Raleigh, N.C,, and Peoria, I11., but no indication “was given that these plans were executed.
