rector, National Association for
the Advancenent of Colored People (NAACP), arrived in
Meridian, Mississippi, via Southern Airlines at about
2:50 p.m. on that date. He stated that Wilkins was met
by a number of local NAACP members and they proceeded via
automobile to the First Union Baptist Church, Davis Street,
Meridian, Mississippi, where at 3:15 p.m. Wilkins spoke to
a crowd of about 150 persons. During his talk he commented
on the aima of the NAACP and stated that the NAACP was
taking no active part in the "Poor People's March on
Washington." He stated that as in the past the only assistanc
being given this program was some legal counsel, and where
dire needs arise, some financial assistance,
Gs cated that at about 5:30 p.m. Wilkins
and other NAACP Meridian officials proceeded to the
Virginia Court Restaurant, Tom Bailey Drive, Meridian, where
they had dinner. At about 7:30 p.m. Wilkins, in the company
of Charles R.Barden, member of the National Board of
Directors, NAACP, Meridian, “Mississippi, “left Meridian en rout
to Jackson, Mississippi, where Wilkins boarded an airlines
