Introduction of Vice President Richard M. Nixon
By J. Edgar Hoover, Director, FBI
It’s a very special pleasure to introduce the next speaker.
Few young men have forged ahead faster than the man I am about to pre-
sent. While only 41 he has already lived a lifetime of achievement, and
in my humble opinion, he is only getting started. He was born in the State
of California, and acquired his education the hard way, his workday start- |
ing at 4:00 a.m. in the store of his father. Through his struggle for an .
education and a livelihood, there was never any wavering of his faith in
the American way of life which has now become symbolic with his public
service. He met adversity, and conquered it because his moral fibre was
strong and his faith in God unwavering. He did his undergraduate work at
Whittier College in California and then later went to the Duke University
Law School where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws Degree. He returned
to Whittler, California, and practiced law and served his country by enlist-
ing in the Navy, where he was discharged in 1946 as a Lieutenant Commander,
The same year, he was elected to Congress and the world now Imows of his
great service on the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Almost
single-handedly, through his diligent and careful preparation and objective
approach, he was responsible for the exposure of Alger Hiss, which subse-
quently led to the conviction of that man. Those efforts of his brought down
upon him the vituperation of all subversives and earned for him the lasting
hate of the smear artists, but the esteem in which he was held by the decent
people of the country, and particularly of his home state, rewarded him
with a seat in the United States Senate. In 1952, he was nominated for the
Vice Presidency and he was elected to that high office. I said in my early
remarks in presenting this gentleman that it was a very special pleasure
for me to make the introduction because some years ago he was extended
an appointment as a Special Agent of the FBI, but having already embarked
upon the practice of law, the FBI's loss ultimately became the country's
gain. Itis my great pleasure to present the Honorable Richard M. Nixon,
Vice President of the United States,”
