On August 18, 1953, PAUL ROBESON was observed in the
audience in U. S. Federal Court, where HENRY P, HUFF, Chairman,
Northwest District Communist Party; JOHN DASCHBACH, Chairman,
Washington State Civil Rights Congress; TERRY PETTUS, Editor,
Weople's World", Northwest Bureau; BARBARA HARTLE, Educational
Director, Northwest District Communist Party; KARLY LARSEN, member
of the District Board, Northwest District Communist Party; and
PAUL BOWEN, Organizer, Central Region, Northwest Communiat Party,
are being tried for conspiracy to violate the Smith Act of 1940,
During the recess ROBESON was observed talking with the defendants
and ROBESON also visited with Dr, HERBERT E, PHILLIPS, self-admitt:
member of the Communist Party, who had testified for the defense,
Since Dr, PHILLIPS was under a contempt citation he was not permit:
to leave the court room at the recess, ROBESON met him in the
U. 8, Marshal's Office, on 8/17/53.
Confidential Informant SR of known reliability, advise
that "Freedom" is a newspaper organized, directed and
controlled by the Communist Party, It deals with Negro
life problema, and has PAUL ROBESON for the Editor, It is
published by Freedom Associates, 53 West 125th Street,
New York, N.Y. b Dd
Confidential Informant sdvised that PAUL ROBESON'Ts
newspaper "Freedom" was distribu © people at his concert on
Sunday, August 16, at Peace Arch Park, Several times during the
program, informant states, the individuals present were urged to
subscribe to the publication,
on Confidential Informant of known
reliability, made available the following letter which he received
from the Seattle Chapter of the Negro Labor Council, This letter
reads as follows:
"Dear Council Member:
“We have adopted *Freedomt as the official national
publication of the Negro Labor Council, ‘'Freedom! along
with our local publication ‘Progress! will serve to bring
te the Negro commmity national and local news--news of strug;
and aspirations of the Negro people, This kind of news is
generally noticeably absent from the widely read Negro press.
"Tt is incumbent upon all membera of NIC firat to sub-
scribe and read 'Freedom' and then preceed to sign up your
friends amd neighbors, Let me suggest that you send in a
dollar ($1.00) for your subscription to Earl George at the
above address, and then get others to do likewise,
