An article which apneared on page 13, column
4, of the September 8, 1949, issue of the "Pittsburgh Press"
a daily and Sunday newspeper, captioned “Concert Here By
“~Hobeson Is Oprosed", reflects that considerable opposition
to ROBESON's aprearance in Pittsburgh was voiced by the
Allegheny County Committee of the Americm Legion in an
effort to prevent a possible riot such as the one which
hed resulted eat ROBESON's recent appearance in Peekskill
New York,
It is noted that the proposed ROBESON's
appearance on October 15, 1919, never took place, and
according to an article which appeared on pave 19;
column 1, of the September 28, 1949, issue of the "Pitts-
burgh Press" captioned "Paul Robeson Mass Meeting Here
Cancelled,” the subject's Pittsburgh sponsors had stated
thet ROBESON would not come to Pitts bureh in October as
he would be too busy in the New York City political
campaigns, one of which was thet of BENJANIN DAVIS who
was running for city Council, The article further re-
flects that ALEXANDER<IRIGHT, “a leader in many left-
wing organizations,in Pittsburgh," hed previously applied
for a permit for the ROBLSON meeting.
DAVIS was a National Board member of the _
Communist Party-USA, and WRIGHT has been identified by qagm
as @ member of the District 5 Communist Partya
