By letter dated March 15, 1946 with a return address
of "The Beeches", Enfield, Connecticut, the subject stated,
"I am avplying for my passport in order to go to Africa. I
want to do some field work toward my Begree PHD, Anthropology,
Hartford Seminary, Hartford, Connecticut. I also want to do
some general research for my writing and lectures. I have already
made ene field trip to Africa in 1936 covering south and east
Africa, all British areas. My beok, African Journey, based on
that trip was published in this country in August 19445 and will
be published in England this spring. 2 have been making a study
of the life of the negro, FELIX EBOUER, late governor general of
French Equatorial Africa, and the French Press and Information
Service are so interested in this work that they have urged me
to visit their part of Africa, where he lived and worked. Beigian,
Officials, a little hurt at the few remarks in my book concerning
their territory, have invited me to visit the Belgian Congo, to
look at, and perhaps write about the changes that are taking place
there, Both the French and British Officials have informed me
that the four months, April, May, Jume, and July, are the really
good months for work and travel in their territories, so I am
anxious to set out as cuickly as possible to leave here early
in April for the four or five months travel there, May I refer
you to the officials NM. JEAN-de~las ROCHE, and Mlle. JEANNEXROUDOT,
ef the French Press and Information Service, 501 Madison Avenue,
New York City and to the M. ALBERT.GORIS, and M, MAXSHORN of the
Belgian Gonsulate, Rockefeller Center, New York City. In case
yor wish to confirm the official approvel and permission I have
received from these countries. I will be very grateful if you |
will facilitate the granting of ny passport at your convenience,

letter, she was issued passport 5206, on March 25, 1946.
‘Passport renewal application dated October 10, 1949
indicated that since subject's last passport was issued she
has resided outside the United States as follows:
French Equatorial Africa, Belgian Cohgo--May and
October 1946, Mexico--September 9, 1949 to September 13, 1949.
She stated that the purpases of her visits to the =
above were fPanthropological research in Africa, personal visits
in Mexico." She indicated that she intended to depart from the
