pro-Communist organizations marched in
their annual show of strength. What The
Daily Worker heralded as “united labor”
turned out to be the old standbys—the

and Communist-infiltrated. Only a few
left-wing AFL contingents marched and
they paid the price—by nightfall, the
AFL ordered the three ers who had
sponsored participation in the pa:ade
suspended.
By far the test triumph of the da
belonged to Communist party itself.
It ordered into the parade about 700 vet-
erans, in uniform and wearing military
decorations. They marched in perfect
ranks chanting: “One-two-three-four. We
don’t want another war.”
On placards, banners, and floats, the
marchers announced where they stood:
@ They were against military use of the
atomic bomb, imperialism, the Taft-
Hartley “slave” labor bill, Representatives
Rankin and J. Parnel! Thomas, Senators

@ They were for peace, independence
of Puerto Rico, a Federal theater, the 35-
hour week, housing, Soviet-American
friendship, Gerhard Eisler, Henry A.
Wallace, the Negro ballplayer Jackie
Robinson, and the return “one-cent
bubble gum.”
Communist spokesmen vied with each
other in trying to cover up an all too
apparent fact—May Day, 1947, was a Bop
compared with other years. Blatantly,
Ben Gold, Communist president of the
Fur and Leather Workers Union,
nounced the parade the “best ever. fi.
Ham Z. Foster, national chairman of the
Communist party, added: “This great
demonstration is but a foretaste of the
great demonstrations to come.” The Daily

marched. The police count: 27,500,
