at Manhattan Centre, at 34th Street and Eighth Averwe, an announcement was made
requesting that the audience attend two rallies which were to be held during
the week of August 30, 1942, One of these rallies, the rally to gain "freedan
for India,*® to be sponsored by the Council on African Affairs, with offices at

1123 Broadway, announced that it would have as its speakers PAUL ROBESON,
VAY TERGAN, and MICHAEL QUILL.
On Monday, September 6, 1942, a rally was held at the Central
Park Wall under the auspices of the New York State CIO, in cooperation with the
USO, At this rally there were approximately seventy-five persons present.
Several of the speakers were JOSEPH CURRAN, President of the Greater New York
Industrial Union Council; SIDNEY“HILIMAN, President of the Amalgamated Workers
Union, C10; and others. After all the speeches had been delivered, PAUL ROBESON
sang the song, “Ballads for Americans" and the Russian song, "From Border to
Border," which he sang in Russian. ,

tion with an unimom woman at MMU. At this time MRS. LAURENSON stated that the j
organization would be known as the "National Marine Emergency Relief Organizsa-
tion" and that MISS JULIE "STEIN, of Room 317, Hotel Roosevelt, New York City,
was doing all the organising work; further, that TSS STEIN has the personal
endorsement of JOSEPH CURRAN, PAUL ROBESON, and others.

posed of five union heads, such as CURRAN and ‘SHSIDY, and would have nothing to
