The February 11, 1959, issue of the "New
York Times" carried a column entitled, "Robeson Will
Perform AS Othello in England." ‘This column reads as
follows: la OT
"Paul Robeson, American singer
and actor, who was reported to be seriously
111 in Moscow last month, will be able to
undertake the title role in 'Othelio' on
April 7 at the Shakespeare Memorial
Theater, Stratford-on-Avon, England.

yesterday by Mr. Robeson in a cable from
Moscow, where he is recuperating, to his |
New York lawyer, Robert Rockmore,
According to Mr. Rockmore, his client was
feeling much better and had decided to
return to London in mid-March. .
- “officials at the Shakespeare
Theater, where 'Othelle! had been
scheduled as the opening bill of its
new season, previously were notified by
Mrs. Robeson that her husband was
suffering from bronchitis and exhaustion,
"She said he would be compelled
to forego the acting assignment. He was
taken to a Moscow hospital on Jan. 12
and is now resting in a sanitorium.*

The rally started at 8:00 p.m. with approximately
2,000 persons in attendance. The first speaker
introduced was ESLANDA ROBESON, wife of PAUL ROBESON.
