This article further set forth that GILBERT C, CLOONAN,
Superintendent, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall,
Pittsburgh, upon cancelling the lease for Robeson's
Concert scheduled April 21, 1958, stated, "We didn't want
his type here," and "We didn't think 1¢ is. right to have
@ person who won't salute his country's flag."
“The Pittsburgh Courier," a national “weekly newspaper published
at Pittsburgh, Pa., April 12, 1958, issue, page three
columns one and two, contained an article entitled, “Church
Opens Its Doors = Robeson Will Sing at Central Baptist," which
set forth, in part, that PAUL ROBESON, labeled by one critic
as "the Red bull butterfly of Iterary teas," but placed high
in the heroes gallery of India's Prime Minister Jawaharial
Nehru because he has represented and suffered for a cause
which should be dear to everyone «= the cause of human
dignity -- would sing at Central Baptist Church, April 21,
at 8:00 PM, according to an announcement made this week by -
the Religious Talent Guild of Pittsburgh and vicinity.
The article set forth that ROBESON, who has been most successful
in needling white America's conscience because of what he
charges is bias against him and the rest of Americats least
privileged minority, will be presented in concert at the church
eat the aforementioned time, according to LEE A MATTHEWS,
promotional secretary, and B, HaLOGAN, president of the

Following an unexpected rebuff by GILBERT C. CLOONAN of ‘the
Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, Oakland, where the concert
was originally scheduled to be held, application was made by
the promoters to two large churches - Wesley Center AME Zion
and Central Baptist. Previously an invitation to hold the
concert in his church was extended by the Rev. CHARLES R.
GORDON, pastor of St. Matthews AME Zion Church in Sewickley,
Pa. who made the gesture almost immediately after CLOONAN
announced that ROBESON could not sing in the Memorial Hall
because of some citizens! and organizations! mjections to
ROBESON's pro-communist leanings.
The article noted that in most cases halls and auditoriums,
both public and private, have been made available to ROBESON
and that religious organizations have been his chief sponsors,
