leave the country to accept singing and acting engagements
in England. The article pointed out that since 1950 ROBESON
had been unable to obtain a passport because of "squabbles

ments in June, The article quoted ROBESON as stating: |
"It is unlikely that I'11 will make it at this time although
this whole thing is getting pretty absurd in the light of
our cultural relations abroad. But if the case came up in
time there is no doubt that I'd win because the State De-
partment is interferring with my livelihood.” The news
article noted that ROBESON spoke informally on the Reed
College campus. It further noted that ROBESON had commented
to the effect that he believed it important for people to.
know that he was getting invitations from abroad because it . -
