ATTENTION SAC, NEW YORK:
For your additional information, on May 29, 1957,
a representative of the State Department advised of a hearing
which had been afforded Robeson at Washington, Ds. Ces on the.
eame date in connection with his recent application for a
paseport, Fobeson was represented by Leonard Boudin, a New York
attorney who ie a Securtty Index subject of your office. Through-
out the nearing, Robeson refused to answer @il questions regarding
communtam and his acttutties on constitutional grounds.
Robeson reportedly attempted to Justify his past
_ conduct and explained that he merely wanted to go to England
) to fulfill some concert engagements. The State Department
fo representative confidentially advised further that Robeson 's
; conduct at the hearing would not improve his chances for
obtaining a passport.
A transcript of the proceedings of the above-noted
hearing will be furnished fo you upon receipt by the Bureau.
