Concerning OWEN LATTI'NGRE, BUDENZ stated that he had never met
T?IMORFE nor did he recall] ever seeing him. He added, however, that he had
heard about LATTIMOPE many times during his, BUDENZ'S, many years in the
Communist Party. He had heard about LATTIMORE principally through reports.

Political Committee meetings wherein the reports were given, there were
present a number of individuals whg were ranking Communist Party members
whon BUDENZ.cannot recall. e dogs recall, however, thet at eome of the
meetings EARL “BROWDER and JAC ACHEL ware present. He recalls that
BROWDER and STACHEL participated ‘in the discussions which came about as a
result of FIELD'S reporte on the work of LATIINORS.
. The reports of FIFLD to the Political Committee concerned the
work of LAT?TINGRE who wes the individual who had been given the assiznnent
by the Panty to sell the idea that the Chinese Communist Movement was in
reality tnebaerartan Reform Hovement. In his revorts, FIELD referred to
LATTINORE din Buch a way that there was no question in BUDRNZ'S mind that
LATTIMOPE was a Communist. He doses not recall FIELD seying that LATTINORE
was a member of the Communist Party, but he does remember that FIELD and
STACHEL and BROWDER all referred to LATTIMNORE as a Comrade or a Communist,
and it was apparent to BUDENZ that they all knew that LATTINCRE was a ;
Co:muniat. BUDENZ stated that he first heard about publicizing the idea
that the Chinese Commonist Movement was in reality the Agrarian Refora
Movement in 1957, and he understond that this idea criginally came from
-BAPL BEOWDER. He added that it was his recollection that the actual campaign
to sell this idea to the public did not go into effect for a number of years
efter 1937.
BUDINZ recalled thet on at least a few occasions FREDERICK VANDERBILT
ITLD in reporting to the Political Committee on the activities of LATTIMORE
had stated that he hod some differences with LATTINORE concerning policy.
FIELD stated that these differeuces were the same differences that the Party
had with BEX)GOLD and ABRAHAIS LAXER. BUDERZ stated that BEN GOLD end
