As soon as was resoved fron the control ef Burkhart and Fale she lmediately Fegeined her bealth. Willian K. Bale and Johs Ramsey were arrested by the State authorities ef Oklahoma whe were working in elose cocperation with this Bureau. The State of Cklahews filed charges against Bele and Rameey, eherging them with the surder of Willian E. Smith. The defendants were turned over te the Federal Oovernzent fer prosecution end on January 8, 1923, the crizinal indletment against Hale and Fameey was returned at Guthrie, Neatera Piatriet ef Ckiahcoma, obarzing then with the murder of Willies E. Smith om ap Indien reservation. During the trial at Cklehom City, Oklahoma, the defense demurred to the indieteent and the eourt held that the United States had ne and remanded the esse beak te the Festern District ef Oklehosa fer trial. . . . Oe July 5, 1926, the Federal Grand Jury at Guthrie, Cxlahem, returned euother indictsent charging Willie 1X. Ente and Jon Ramsey with the surder ef Henry Roan om am Indien reservation. fhe defendants were arraigned ond entered a plea of net guilty. ‘the trial cosmencsd Jely 3€, 1986, and lasted until August 26, 1926, resulting in a bung jury, ef whieh five were for aequittal and seven for conviction. 281
