/ ¢ es i] 2. S. Bepartment af Justice Hu. x i: pt Pave of Inbestigation | P. 0. Box 1535 Oklehoma City, Oklahoma November 17, 1932 RECORDEN | = co RAC : MMB. 65-436 _& Qin an a Director, NOV 2 20 hae 4 United States Bureau of Investication, * ont fy yateate thn e emnepiet ene ee pear Sir: Re: Osage Indian Murder Broadcast All of us et this office looked forward with much interest to the broadcast of the Osage Indian murder story which occurred on the © 15th instant, and IJ hed teken pains to give the matter _a little local publicity by heving an item appear in two of the local newspapers. a ee Y regret to say thet we were all very much disappointed in the manner in which the story was dramatized and it is felt that the manner in which the episode was dramatized did not do justice whatever to the facts of the investigation. Sheriff Harve Freas, Pewhuska, whose pert was protrayed in the broadcast, is a Lig, upstanding western Sheriff, very active and aggressive, wherees his part es pictured in the broadcast would create in the minds of the listeners an impression that he was perhaps a little “dried-up runt", ignorant, fearsome and requiring to be jed. I suspect that if Sheriff Freas listened to this broadcast, he will not hereafter have a very kindly feeling toward this Bureau. I realize that the subject matter of investigation was difficult to dramatize, but inasmuch as it is one of the most spectacular ani im- portant cases ever hendled by this Bureau, I think much more favoreble publicity could have been had by heaving the story told by Agent Conroy along the seme plans used by him in other stories #hich he has put out over the radio, and to which I have listered with a great deal of interest and enthusiasm. TI realize that the troadcasta by Agent Conray do not reach one-tenth as many people es the N.b.C. broadcasts, but I wish to say thet jin my opinion the ectivities of the Bureau can be much more effectively brought out along the lines he uses than by the grgma tization system as employed in the N.B.C. broadcast. _ Please be assired that I have only the best interests of the Fureau at heart in writing this letter of critician.
