As I remember, some time in 1920, or possibly in 1919, Hale told me that W/. EH. Smith had given him, Hale, a oheok for 36,000.00; that 35,600.00 of this money would cover the amount’ Smith owed him, and tho 4500.00 would cover intorest. Some time later I was at Bill Hale's ranch, and W. E. Smith drove up with his wife, and I saw Hale and gmith talking. I was at the barn, about one hundred yards away. In a short time Smith ond wife left.
