D. Fard who claimed he was "the Supreme Ruler of the Universe." In reality, he was an ex-convict who had served a three-_ year sentence at San Quentin Penitentiary for a drug violation. In the Spring of 1933, after the arrest of one of his followers who had murdered a man in a human sacrifice, Fard was ordered out of Detroit and has since completely disappeared, Fard's leadership of the cult was taken over by a Georgia-born Negro named Elijah Poole. Poole began calling himself Elijah Muhammad and explained to cult followers that Fard had been Allah - himself and had appointed him the "Messenger of Allah" to lead "the #0-called Negroes in the wilderness of North America" out of the slavery imposed on them by the white race.
