Star dated February 23, 1934, the National Association for the
Advencement of Colored People (NAACP) was organized folloving the \
rece riot of 1908 at Springfield, Illinois. WILLIAM siGLISHJMALLING
suggested an organization for the protection of the colored race.
A call was seat out by OS:ALD GARRISONAVILLAND. Among those respona~
ing were JANE™KDDAUS, LILLIAN DESALDS* JOHN,DESEY, Rabbi STEPEN = /

On Lincoln's birthday,
formed for carrying out the purposes of the organization. In 1934
the NAACP had three hundred seventy-five branches and a membership
