At 3:35 p.m., Junell, 1963, Mr. MEDGAR EVERS, Field
Secretary, National Association for the Advancement of Colored
. People (NAACP), Jackson, Mississippi, telephonically advised
that sometime between 4:00 and 5:00 P-m., June 8, 1963, he was
almost hit by a Jackson, Mississippi police car.
EVERS said he was walking east on Lynch Street and
started to cross Franklin Street. At the time, a Jackson,
Mississippi police car containing two officers was headed east
On Lynch Street. This car had slowed down, stopped and was
starting to back into Franklin Street, apparently to turn
around. EVERS said that when officers saw him start across
Franklin Street, the driver of the police car accelerated
back on to the curb of Franklin Street to keep fron being struck
by the police vehicle. REVERS said the officers laughed about
this. According to EVERS this police car bore license
EVERS also advised that on June 11, 1963 he was followed
by police vehicle wherever he happened to go in Jackson,
Mississippi.
EVERS was informed the above information would be
furnished to the Civil Rights Division of the JU. S. Department
of Justice.
