has previously been of assistance to this office. - LW
In the course of a rather
lengthy interview in which various individuals in the film industry were dis-
cussed, he brought up MARLENE DIETRICH and her affair with ;
to DIETRICH he sta
her trip to Chicago. He said she |
onée He advised that DIETRICH had come to him and discussed the GARIN
affair, stating that she was madly in love with him, and thet she was afraid |
that 20th Century Fox and Source A would not be able to obtain a quota number
for him, and that he would have to go back to France. With reference to Source
A, DIETRICH told him that 20th century Fox and MG-M had on occasions hired her _ 7 nk
of and his income tax trouble, and said it washis understanding that
she had Le EP ‘0 believe that there would be no sentence to be served —
because of herab: y to handle big people in Washington. As for DIETRICH her- ‘
self, this Source advised that when Germany first started her war of aggression, ‘- :
he had discussed with her the feasibility of putting her in various camp shows -
but had decided not to for two reasons: first, because it was cheap publicity
to capitalize on the war, and second, because she had a mother and sister in
Germany. When the United States, however, entered the war, this Source stated ;
he went to her and asked her what she wanted to do. He related that DIETRICH j
stated that she was willing to do anything to serve this country. When he :
pointed out that she still had her mother in Germany, being unable to bring
_her over heretofore, DIETRICH replied that "I can't help it. Let's go ahead, jf 9"
and T'll spend all my time pleying camp shows or-selling bonds.”
