She knew nothing as to whether there was any more intimate relation, and even shather they were good friends, but she assumed that they mmst have been. She did not mow whether DTETRICH hed teen in connection with them since the war or even if she had come te this country, but in view of MARLENE'S infatuation for GABIN, or at Least her pursuing him, and because DIETRICH had once kmown >- Source A thought it “POSSIBLE that they were communicating now and still © to get GABIN to go bask to France and make pictures for Continental Fins. St this point Source A brought out thet she had been hired by 2Q0: Can- tus Fox Studios and-Colonel DARRYL ZANUCK in particular to handle the cage of - JEAN GASIN with the State Department; that this case presently consisted of try~ ing to get an immigration quota number or make appropriate arrangemente soe that GABIN would not have to return to France, She indicated that he was having trouble doing that; that he was only in this country under a vieitor's visa, To that end she advised that about a month ago she was in Washington, De Ce, making the necessary arrangements contacting the necessary people to properly presant the case to the State Department, She said GABIN did not want to go back to France; that hia status is presently being reviewed by the Insigration Department; that she has checked inte the matter thoroughly, written letters back to France, etc., and is convinced that he is the simple, ordinary, peasant type of Frenchman who not only dees not know enough to be engaged in any sub« versive activities but would not do so. While in Washington working in GABIN'S behalf, she had him come down to the city from New York where he was then stopping. Shortly thereafter, DIETRICH came down to Washington, salled GABIN en the ‘phone in Source Als office, told him that ashe had arrangements made for him to stay in a room next to her in the Carleton Hotel, and that she was going to get everything fixed up with the War and State Department so that he would have no trouble remaining in this country. Source A indicated that she was very incensed at this presumptuous and dictatorial action on the part of DIETRICH in trying to take the matter out of Source Als hands, Details of how DIETRICH called up an official in the State Department _ who is a member of the Reviewing Board and had him over to her apartment for the ~ purpose of hastening that Departmant's action in the GABIN casa were furnished by Source B. The writer was advised that DIETRICH told the State Department that she would vouch for GABIN.
