Ke testified before s\subdcemnittee of the Committee on Un-American Activities, Qnited States House of Representatives, Washington, D. @., om \June 21, 1956. Miller admitted having attended 5 or 6 meetings of CP writers in 1947 but dented haitng been pater CP diagcipline. In response to a question concerning whether he had signed | an application to. join the CP Miller teatified that in 1939 or 1940, he had stgned what he thought te be at application for a atudy course in Marziam but that ke did not know the exact nature of the application. He refuped to discuss aottvities of any other individuals and wee, therefore, -on July 85, 1956, etted for contempt of the Heuse of Repreo sentatives, United States Congress. Contempt of Congress ta an offense aubject to criminal pYoseowtion. . ' oa LANCLGSL ie On July 6, 1956, Miller wes issued Passport Number I29936, good for a peried of 6 months, net to be extended without ezpreas authorization of the United States Departnent of State. In his pasaport application Miller-atdted he tr~ tended to proceed by plane from Wew York City to Eagland .. about July 15, 1956, for @ period af one month te 6 weeks ' $0 cast and assist in prodwetion of his play "A View From the Bridge.” Wew York Qity newspaper articles reflected ,,, 259) that en August 89, 1956, Miller had arrtyed in New York / tee SD from EAgland to see hie children and that as of Septerber 1956, he had returned to England.
