% “APPENDIX NATION OF ISLAM, ° ose » PORMERLY REFEERID TO AS MUSLIM CULT OF ISLAM, ALSO RNOWN AS MUHAMMAD'S TEMPLES OF ISLAM In February, 1957, a confidential informant advised that the “Nation of Islam” is an organization composed entirely of Negroes which was orsanized in 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, The national leader is Elijah Munammad, who claims to have been selected by Allah, the Supreme being, to lead the so-called Negro race out of slavery in the wildemess of North America, According to Mubanmad, the purpose of the organization is to establish an indevendent Black natien dn the United States, Members foliow the teachings of Muhammad, which are allegedly based on nis interpretation of the "Koran," ‘They are teught that there is no such toning as ea Negro: that the so-called Hegro race is the original race cn earth and is Asiatic in origin and nature; that they ere not citizens of the United States but mevely slaves; that the white race, referred to as “white devils," is inferior to the Negre race put has explotied the Negroes, ircosed slave names upon them, withheld rrom them the history of their tiue identity and culture, and, a8 a consequence, must and will be destroyed in the approaching “War cf Armageddon,* In the past, officials and members of the "Nation ef Islam,” including Elijah Muhanad, have refused to vegister under the prevtsions of the Selective Service Acts‘ &hd have @eclavred that menbers owe no allegiance to the United States, In Janvary, 1957, another confidential informant related thet Muhammad etated the> apon agvice of lagel sdunsel, he haa tempered his personal statements and inatructions to his ministers concerning the tenets and princinies of this organization in order to avoid prosecution by the Government for violation of the laws of the United States, However, he has not indicated any fv-uamental changes are proposed in the teachings of the organization, a soa sabeemg geno reeset amen STEEN
