There appeared in the "Hew Masses", a Goemunist weekly
publication for May 3, 1936, Page 19, an article entitled, "The
Moscow friale ~ A Statenent by American Progressives", which was
pigned by approximately one hundred and fifty so-called American
Progressives, Thies etatenent seapletely supported the policy of
the Soviet Union in ita se-called "demonstration trials” as a
Fesuit of whieh most of the leading Old Bolsherike were assassinated,
Lillian Hellman was one ef the signers ef this statenent in support

A news item appeared in the New York Times for October 19,
1938, to the effect that fourteen Aneriean volunteers who had been
eaptured by the Franco forces during the Spanish Civil War had
arrived in New York City from Spain. A dimer was given for theses
d4ndividuale on the night ef October 18, 1936, at the Hotel Commodore,
Sew York City, which was the cocasion for the launching ef a drive
fer ene kundred and fifty thousand dollars to bring back other
American volunteers in Spain, It was estinated that there were at
that time approximately 1200 such additional American volunteers in
Spain, The dinner was given by the Friends of the Abraham Linsoln
Brigade, Among the speakers of the evening was Liliian Mellman.
