- -set up by the SPAINISH REFUGES RELIEF CAMPAIGN called the AMERICAN RESCUE SIP
KISSIGN, the purpose of thich was to raise tho sum of .300,000 to rescue refugees
from tho Spanish Civil ‘iar. The address of this organization was 38] Fourth
avenue, New York, N.Y. This was also the address of the LEAGUE & ANERICAN WRITERS,
When this projeot was started, it secured the endorsemont of Mrs. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT,
HSLEN KELLER and other very prominent persons. When Mrs. ROOSEVELT and Miss KELLER
discovered that it was a Communist corttrolled projoot, they publicly withdrew thore-

SOURCE informed that she was a signer of @ document calidd “In Defense
of tho Bill of Rights". This was a protest against attacks on the Communist ‘arty.
The effort originated in Nev York, but solicited sponsors and signers nationally.

Sponsor of an organization called "ASSEMBLY FoR JUSTICE TO NATIONAL
KINORITIZS", set up in “ashington, D, C. October 27, 1941. This was a Communist
front organization created for the usual purposes, ¢ pressure group.

of Notr York was dravm in as a sponsor of this affoir, but withdrerv publicly when
ho discovered it was a Communist project.

62,570 stated that Miss HELLMAN, by her sponsorship of numerous
efforts made by the Commmist Party and ite front organizations to prevent aid to
England and Frenee during tho period of the pact between Stalin ond Hitlr and by
her support of the AMERICAN PEACE HOBILIZATION in ite efforts to dofeat our
national defenso, and then her later change to one of patriotism and all out aid
to the allies, showed that she is in close sympathy with the lino of the Communist
Party in the United States.
As evidones of that change in line, sho vas a signer of a call to
"All Crcativo “orkors"” in the United States, to demand full support to Great
Britain and the Soviet Union in their struggle for the "demolition of Fascism". -
This call, rhich she signed, was sent ouk by the LEAGUE OF AMERICAN WRITERS
about July 20, 1941, approximately thirty days after the attack on Soviet Euseia
by Hitler,
