MEAORANDU:: OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATION - MR, D. 0. SMITH | "oe
Hr. D. 0, Smith telephoned from Chicago with reference to the Verné Miller
case, and gave the following information: During the first part of last night
the men covering the apartment in which Willer is supposed to be didn’t attract
much attention, tut today residents in the apartment house are reporting the
Agents as suspicious characters. They have withdrawn squads in the vicinity,
but that means some avenue must be left coverec. Agent Guinane, who is on the
case today, is.of the opinion that the apartment should be raided. Mr. Smith
stated this woulé endanger the lives of the Agents, because a woman had taken
a heavy suitcase to theapartment which no doubt contained his arsenal. Vi Miller
left the apartment today to go to the hairdresser's but the man has not been out
since yesterday. Vi made a telephone call yesterday to inquirg the price of a
round-trip bus ticket to Minneapolis, indicating that she might be leaving. . How- .
ever, they believe that if she returns it will be to this apartment. The Agents
are not certain that the man in the apartment is Verne Miller; Agent Madalla got
only a fleeting glance of him as he went by the door; Agent Notesteen, who is
accvaintec with “ller, has been on the job since early this morning, but of
course the man hes not left the apartnent since that time.
Mr, Smith stated that there is an alley about six or eight feet wide upon
vhich an apartment house is located in which they are endeavoring to procure a
second-story apartment, for the purpose of keeping under surveillance the window
of Miller's apartment. I instructed Mr, Smith that this should be done, keeping
the Miller apartment closely covered from outside as well as inside, for at leest
another tventy-four hours; and thet he should caution the Agents to be absolutely
certain that the man is Verne Miller before they start shooting.
ir, Smith advised that Bobby Moore, who is very friendly vith the Millers,
occupies the apartment almost directly beneeth Vits, and suggested that one of
- them might sleep in her apartnent due to the fact that Vi's epartment contains
only a cot.
Mr. Smith will keep me informed as to any further developments.
