. Shelton states that upon their arrival at a point
near Monroe and at Temperance, Michigan, the three noticed a man
_leaving a Chrysler car along the side of the road. The car
appeared to have been run out of gasoline; that because the battery
in the Whippet was not in good working order they arrived at the
conclusion that they would remove the battery from the Chrysler and
it wae while Shelton was performing thie work that the Deputy
Sheriff cane upon Shelton, and when he started walking toward the
Whippet eedan, which was parked nearby, the drivers departed.
Sheriff Bailey advised that the deputy 414 not see
the men in the car sufficiently to give a description of them, but
it eppeared that the cer was a Whippet coach and also appeared to
bear Ohio license. Sheriff Bailey has the aforementioned Chrysler
oer in his possession and had to date been unable to ascertain
the neme of the owner or to determine whether or not same was
stolen. Sheriff Bailey states that Shelton had no papers or money
in his possession when arrested; that he refused to talk for ser-
eral days; thet he finally gave the names of Verne Miller and Biil
Wiseman as the men with whom he had been riding in the Whippet
coach.
Shelton aleo stated that these two men had in the
car a 30-30 rifle, a .38 calibre Smith & Wasson pistol, a 45
calibre German Luger, and two dark colored piatols; that one of
these mon haf three euitsa of dlothing, including golf knickers,
and the other, two suits. He also atated that they bad a set of
golf aticks in the car. 7
The Sheriff informed the Agent that he had deen
furnished with a newspaper clipping by one of the prisoners in the
county jail et Monroe, which clipping recited the maseacre at
Kanees City, and went on to state that police had identified Vern
C. Miller and Williem Weissman as participants of the crime, ané
that these men were alleged to have been seen on the national
highway near Springfield, headed either for Columbus or Toledo,
ariving a blue coupe with black fenders and wire wheels, carrying
Kansas license plates.
There is an indication from the actions of shelton
that Herhaps he became familiar with the names in this particular
newspaper article and manufactured the story which he recited. He
however upon being shown identification orders of the various
individuals wanted in Keneas City, partially identified that of
Vernon C. Miller alias ¥. C. Moore ae the man with whom he had been
riding for a period of four or five weeks, end the man who was
