Ft. Smith to Hot Springa transmitting the information in question. How-
ever, from the momorendum of Agents Anderson ani Nathan, as quoted herein, |
it becomes apperent that the "tip-off" to Hot Springe, Arkancas, from
Ft. Smith must bave come by way of the Associated Press dispatches. The
telephone call from Ft. Smith to Hot Srirings as outlined on Page 60 of
the report from the Kansas City office dated June 26, 1955, appears now
to ha ve been not connected with this case.
Attention ie directed to the memorandum of Agente Anderson and Nathan,
with reference to telephone calle from Thayer, Missourl, to the home of
Harry H. Hoops, Hot Springs, Arkansas, Telephone No. 2095, and to the
telegrams charged to his telephone. It appeara that investigation at
Thayer will be important, in view of the fact that a letter bas just
been received from Henry D. Green, Attorney~-at-Law, West Plains, Missouri, |
stating that PhenixAPonald, FredBerker and Alvin’Karpis ve a friend,
with whom they have been in the East, named Mise GeraldyWeller, whose
home was formerly at Thayer, Missouri, and whose mother now resides there.
It was stated that(by Mr. Green in his letter)Miss Weller is now presumed
to de in Kenses City receiving her mail at General Delivery es Mre. Gerald |
- Wpted. ‘Barker and Karpie have been prominent suspects in this case here- —
- kofore and are known to be henchmen(especially Barker)of Herbert 4. Farmer.
Investigation on July 27th at Kansas City, through the Post Office Inspector
in Charge, hae developed that there ie a letter at General Delivery for
Mro. Gerald Dial, this phase of the investigation being conducted by Special
agents Brentley and Turrou, and they ascertained that the letter in question
wos mailed at « railroad post office between Kansas City, Missouri, and Mam-
phis, Tenneseee, July 24, 1933, and was received at Kansas City on 7-25-35.
The wonan named Mrs. Gerald Dial has called for mail twice within the last
week. The Agents saw the letter, and the envelope ie from the Robert E.
Lee Hotel, FKansae City, Missouri. Through the Post Office Inspector at
Kansas City, it was ascertained that the letter now awaiting delivery con-
teins within £¢ two other letters, beth written in pencil. They appear to
be from sisters of "Mrs. Dial® who reside at Thayer, Missouri. Mention is
made in each letter as to whethor Mrs. Diel has seen “Mrs. K.® (Probably
Agente Brantley and Turrou also ascertained that a registered parcel,
Registary No. 034325, was mailed at Kanses City on June 26, 1935, to
Mrs. Sadie Weller, care Beulah Weller, Thayer, Missouri. Apparently,
this package was sent by Mre. Dial, but, pursuant to new postal regu-
lations, the name and eidrese of the sender was not recorded, - At
this time a constant watch ie being maintained at the General Delivery
window at the Kansas City Post Office, and when “Mrs. Dial® calle for
her mail, she will be placed under surveillance, and later developments
will be pursued.
