' the Chief of Police and who became the chief defense witness, Word - -* west out in the underworld to save the gambler, witocss vere dug up to backup the story that was told by the Gasbler ané the City stormy, that Bullivan was the aggressor thet he was picking on a weakling, tha he was the town bully and all sorts of talk went around to discredit the dead aan who could aot speak in defense of his name it was even aid he was trying to extort moucy from the gambler and that McLeughlin -bed advised him not to pay and that was way the Chief was antagonistic to the City Attorney, well et any rate the City Attorney certainly did not dignify hie official positiun in this instance and be has earned for himself honestly the reputation of being Leart and soul in accord with the workings of the criminal underworld which also includes his good man Fridge who he appointed az Calef cf Police frocz a Bath House Attendent.
