JUL 19 iv Fer thal! pratectia of Lb 8 one who Have been aselsting the Bureau in the above entitled matter, and in order to bring the sericus-~ ness of the situation directly to your ettention, I wish to call your atten- tion to one PortergAustes], a resident of Hot Springs, Arkanses, who has been furnishing information, particularly to Agent anderson, and who wes previously known to agent Frank Smith of thie office for a number of years. It became known around Hot Springa that Anateel had talked to the authori- ties and on July Sth neer Hot Springs while driving om the highway in hia cer be was crorded off the road, hie car overturned and he was killed. This does not seem to have been on accident but was no doubt the deliberate -- action of some gengstere desiring to revenge themselves on him for having furnished information to the author ities, Ae any informant or undercover person sssisting the Bureau on this matter rune the same risk and every precaution should be teken to keep the identity of such a person in confidence. There is no length to which this @ganized gang will not go and I have been uneasy aa to the sefety of Acents Vetterli, Lackey, and Smith for the reason that they are of course vell know to the gangsters to have witnessed the killings at Kense City, and . ere of course potential identifying witnesses. Of courses our om Agents ‘have to teke care of themselves the best they can in thie matter, but it fie: our duty to protect as far as possible persons outside the service who as- sist us end I think every office concerned in the investigation should be especially cautioned aa to divulging the identities of sources of information in reports or otherwise. The original infomant who enabled us to capture aan Nash 1a very mich worried, stating he fears thet eme of the gang will cap- Sara ture Agent Gmith or myself and torture us to make us disclose who put the pe finger on Nash. He states thet Dicksgalatas, the boss gangster in Hot Springe, has mede a vow to kill whoever did the job. Of course this may te sonemhatof ean exaggeretion on the part of the infomant but I thought you . should know about the situation. ma "tthe be COPIES pESTROL BE enclosing herewith for your personel informetion a confiden- 9) ayel zy wes ax, = ; ‘ Crs ; Snowe AL, .. wees SUF Mm per, POE Le 7m NY.
