Springfield and Washington Field insure that
appropriate local authorities are aware of the letter
received by Adlai Stevenson,
Boston on immediately discuss this matter with
United States Attorney and take appropriate action. Each
receiving office submit results of investigation in a fora
suitable for ¢issoninatioa.
NOTE .
By letters dated 7/3/68 and 7/8/68 Secret Service
forwarded to Bureau anonymous communications received by
Senator Edward Kennedy's Office which contained possible
threats. These two letters were discussed with Assistant
United States Attorney, Washington, D. C., who declined |
prosecution stating that lettexrdre vague and as such do:.:
not constitute violation of Federal Extortion Statute. By
letter dated 7/16/68 Secret Service furnished communication
received by Ethel Kennedy which contained a possible threat
regarding Senator Kennedy. Secret Service believes letter
received by Ethel Kennedy was written by same person who wrote
the other two letters to Senator Kennedy, The FBI Laboratory
will compare the two letters received by Senator Kennedy's Office
with the letter received by Ethel Kennedy and the letter ré¢bivec
by Adlai Stevenson and advise Boston, Springfield and Washington
