¥ - The Sunday edition of "News of the World,"a London newspaper,
which was described by Bates as a scandal sheet, carries a front-page
ry to the effect that the American FBI is making inquiries into
4 revelations arising from the Profumo matter. It was indicated that at
~ Washington's request MI-5 had furnished information about activities, in
~% England of an international blackmailing organization: which was known as
“the syndicate,” and that American investigators had‘flown to England
co | from Washington to interview several people. According to Bates, it is
.: © “) bis belief that the mention of investigators arriving in England probably
refers to certain Air Force personnel who arrived in London to conduct
&|inguiry regarding Air Force personnel involved in captioned matter.

Bates indicated that the “Sunday Express," also a London
newspaper, carried an article regarding prostitution and call girls in
% the United Nations and in other high places. Bates indicated he,has
reviewed all Sunday newspapers and the above two articles are the only
% stories of any consequence. He stated that he has received press inquiri
and hag indicated he had no comment, He advised that newspaper reportere
are eagerly attempting to gain information and reportedly have’ attempted
to surveil officers of Scotland Yard, ~~

stories regarding this matter; however, he believes that, from the papers
he reviewed today, an attempt is being made to play this matter down. .
