‘ CIVIL RIGHTS and DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Dear Mr, Hoover:
Mr. FRANK COLEMAN, Assistant to the Attorney General, appeared
in Springfield, Illinois on September 10, 1943 and called at my office
for a conference in connection with this case. He was apprised general-
ly of the results of the investigation as of the date of the conference.
He apveared to be very well satisfied with the results of the investiga-
tion to date and made no unusual requests or suggestions while at this
office.
As a matter af personal interest to you, he confidentially
informed me that he had been informed by the Attorney General that
President ROCSEVELT had approved the indictment of subjects in this
case and trial of subjecte subsequent to indictment. He indicatec thet
the Grand Jury would convene to hear the evidence in this matter about
October 1, 1943, although he does not know definitely at the present
time whether the case will be presented in Washington, D.C. or at
Springfield, Illinois. He mentioned that Federal Judge CHARLES G. .
BRIGGLE in Springfield wes a Republican and indicated that the Depart-
ment was giving consideration to the possibility that he might be
biased in the matter in the event the case was tried before him, due
to the fact that charges might be brought by the oppositiom—(defendants )
that the case was political persecution on the part of the administration.
He also stated that he learned in Springfield casually that EDMUNQABURKE,
Attorney for U.M.W. was Jury Commissioner and that BURKE might exert some
influence through this position to Favor the defendants in this case. He /,
said if the case was presented to a Federal Grand Jury in Springfield, a
that probably the Department would request th nt of another
Jury Commissioner for the handling of this aD 5
