As you know, the Bureau is conducting an extensive investigation
in this matter at the request of the Attorney General to determine if John
L. lewis and certainlothere of thd-tnited Mine Workers of America and Carl

Ing the years 19397 to 1941 in violation of the Civil Rights Statutes to
injure and oppress Elshoff's employees in the free exercise of the rights

ployees, who were at that time members of the rival union, th Progressive
Mine Workers of America, This memorandum is being submitted bring the
matter up to date as to the mumber of interviews conducted and ths informa-
tion obtained.
Investigation and Interviews with Miners
To date the Springfield Office has submitted reports reflecting
the interviews of approximately 362 individuals who were employees of sub~
ject Elshof! in 1937 SU UhS Tike Mine Bb was closed down, These individuals
for the most part did not participate actively in the labor difficulties as they
related to negotiations and union organisational work, nor do they include the
14 alleged spies and certain other officials connected with the unions and
management.
A review cf the reports reflecting ths interviews and signed state-
ments secured from these 362 miners indicates that approximately, ve
