"I returned to jfine B on November, 1939 as a PUA member, Sometime
after T had return vork Andrew Schrelevious came to my house which at
that time vas Springfield, Ill, and asked me to join

the mince. <A veek later, Tony Plotch and John Cotton came to my house on

that vould happen to ne if I did not join. That same night Tony Plotch gave
me a menbership card and I signed up rTith the UMW because I vas afraid vhat
might happen to me if I did not sign up vith the UM,
“J did not aitend the PHA meeting on May 11, 1937, but I kner
there vas poing to be a mecting from talking rith the other miners. I
heard the next day by ‘ord of mouth from the other miners that some miners
uneluded in the list of names set out in this statement were expelled
from the PMA at that meeting.
"The only thing I know about the wave scale trouble in the Spring
of 1937 was that Elshoff did not recopnize the retroactive clause in the contract
thich meant I vas supposed to get back pay, dating back to April 1, 1937. I
never got this back pay.
"The day of the strike, in Vay, 1937, I vas digging coal in Box
the South section of the ming. Om this day I loaded ny coal cars short because
the PMA Pit Committee tald ne to, I understand that trouble had started on
that morning vith Elshoff because he vould not discharge the miners tho had
been throtn out of the Pita.
"Tl vent out to the minc to help picket about about three months in
the PUA picket line after the strike started.
“Y alvays Vented to keep on vorking under the PMA. I never ranted
to po back again under the ii.. J ras forced oo rot um to the Uf bir Ploteh
and John Cotton or lose my job.
*JT do not renember signing any petitions in the sumer of 1937.
"In September, 1937 1 vent out to the mine then the mine tried
to open. The Pid leaders told us ve vould not be able to go dorm into the
mine to vork that day because re vere Progressives and because the ‘fine B
