L- At the above time SAC Halford called and talked tM wise caney_
c vr. Hallford stated that Mr. Frank Coleman from the De~
partment had arrived at Springfield and he had conferred with hin
OW Occasions since fis arrival there Thursday night last. Mr. Hallford
stated that the investigation was rounding out in good sha and at present
the Agents were interviewing miners with regard to Mine "A" which adjoins
Mine "B", the latter being involved in instant investigation.
You will recall Elshoff was the operator of Mine "B* at the time the
miners working therein elected thp(frogressive Kine Workers Union as the bar~-
. gaining agent, resulting in the ¢losing down of Mine "BY on the part of the
i. operator Elshoff and subsequent, of course, to the payments of $225,000 made
an ‘by Lewis and the UMW to Elshoff, until finally the UMW in 1941 felt confident
int enough to hold another election resulting in the UMW being named as bargain-

It appears that there might have been soue irregularity about the
operation of Mine "a" - that is - the mine was being operated or attempting
to be operated through driving a connecting tunnel between Mine "A" and Mine
pu. at any rate, Mr, Hallford stated that even with this new development, f
things looked bright and it still appears that the Springfield Office will
