INTER ie "on OIG CCCOBRBION iff tne reai OF avi, subsequent to the
attempted opening on September 27th, EDMUNDSON called me
continue and said he wanted to seo me at UMW Headquarters, When
I met him at UMW Headquarters he asked me to drive him
out to ELSHOFF's residence for a conference, At ELSEOFF's residence we
started to talk about the question o° gettirg enough men to oporete Mine “B",
but shortly efter the conference started EDNUNDSON said he wanted to talk
to ELSEOFF in private and, accordingly, they left the room and held a
confidential conversation for about ten minutes. EDMUNDSON then asked me
to drop him off at the Leland Hotel, He did not inform me concerning the
details of his discussion with ELSHOFF. ,
"Subsequent to September 27th, i had nothing further to do with
the Nine "BY matter aside from the incident rolated in the preceding
paragraph until the early part of December. However, during this period
I did occasionally see the men who were trying to convert the employces
of Kine "B" to UMW and the reports of these men indicated they were not making
much hoadway.
"Two or threc days prior to Decomber 13, 1937, EDMUNDSON told me
they vere going to try te operate the mine on December 13th to see how many
men vould report for work, inasmuch as an injunction had gone into effect
removing the PMA picket line. He asked mé to go out to the mine on the
morning of Decembor 13th to ses what happened, I went to the mine that
morning but only about a dozcn men showed up for work and these were the
men whom I had met at UM Hcadquarters prior to the strike on May 12th. There
WAS no onc around to stop men from reporting for work and the small attendance
simply indicated that the UMy drive to convert members had failed. After
this EDMUNDSON stated the UM. would not participate in the clection which
was to be held by the National Labor Relations Beard on December 15th.
"DSUNDSOM seid that it was apparent that UM. would got very few votes, He
said that he hac ascertained that the Progressive employces of Mine "B"
intended to report at their Headquarters and vote in a body.
"T understood from indirect sources that after December 15, 1937,
ELSHOFF and EDIMUNDSON had a big argument. I understood that ELSIOFF told
EDFUNDSON that if he could not make any better progress in brcaking down the
Progressive loctl he would simply have to sign a contract with the Progressives
and operate with Frogressive porsonnel, I understood thet at this time .
EDUUFDSON was angry about the matter. because he claimed he had already
thrown away a good deal of money in the Mine "B" matter and had nothing to
show for it. -However, I did not hear any reports at that timo as to whethor
EDMUNDSON and ELSNOFF had come to any undorstanding congerning further
financial arrangements. °
