ing conditions in Mine B if they joined U.M.W%., but if they ,
stayed in F.M.A., the conditions would not be good.

"I finally joined U.M.¥. because I thought I had to to keep my job
at Mine B. I had no fault to find with P.M.A., and merely signed up with U.M.%.

"I heard that some men were beat up at Mine B, but I don't know
their names, -
"I don't kucw why the strike otarted. I don't know if the miners
were loading cars with short wiights on the day the strike started. I foumd
out about the strike after I haa canolsted my work on the day the trouble
started. I was told that the men were not working any more. I don't remember
who told me this. .
"I remember that I signed a petition for P.M.A. shortly after the
strike started. This petition was to show that the P.M.A. had most of the
miners at Mine B in their union, and that they wanted to go back to work. I
don't rece]l any other petitions.
"I received a notice fram Mine B in Septamber 1937, as I reoall,
that the mine would reopen. The notice sai2z that the mine would open with
U.M.5. men only. I recell the picket line in the fell of 1987, but I don't
remember how the picket line was decided upon. “he purpose ef the picket was
to keep U.M.". men from going into Mine B to work because we of the P.M.A.
felt we had the right to protect our jobs. I remember that the P.M.A. official-
used to pick up the miners and take them out to the mine to the picket line.
They told me to go out to the picket line, but they did not threaten meror
force me to go. I only saw Mine B men in the picket line.
"In the elettion in December 1937 at the State Armory I yoted for
the P.M.A. because I liked that union a5 well as I liked the ULM. Wes and I
kmew that most of the miners vreferred the P.M.As union

At this time I was « member of the U.M.W. because I knew that I would have
been beat up if I had not joined when I ad,
