Re: JOHN L. LEVIS, ET AL L227 c. the U.M.W. had men going around trying to sign men up but I dont kmow anything about the methods ‘they used. I once heard that during the strike Falscetti went over to the Jefferson mine to run it, I don't know anything about fr. Elshoff owning any interest in or being & Yeciever far ‘this mine, "I have been shown by 4g¢ents of the F.B.I. an affidavit dated hug, 25, 1937 at Virden, Ill. this affadavit refers to Charles Roth, whe is now dead, telling me and others to attend a U.M.. meeting. The information therein is true anc correct and I reaffirm it and my signature. The statements in it were given freely by me and I was not forced to sign it or compelled in any way. I believe it was made at the Court House in Virden, Ill. “"T renember that minew °" was reopened in the fall of 1937, I knew it was going to onen but dont recall just how I got notice of this. I believe someone phoned and told mc about it. I have no rccollection of the frogressives having held any meeting to decide what they vere going to go. As I remember I went back the first day all ready to go to work but didn't. I think that only about 5 or 6 men went down in the mine that day. Thosc men as I recall wers Pete Carter, Cotton Ananias, Andy schrelevious, Tony Plotch, Pominic Fasquale, Sammy, Frank Auston, John Sirtout, Geo. & Emory Jacaway (Father & Son), Charles Bohanon and James Fule, I belicve they were all in working clothes and nobody tricd ta stop them, J] dont remember any body saying you had to join U.M.”. in order to go to work. T dont remomber that these mon verc supposed to be U.M.7. spies but do romember that they went to work. I came on back home that day and -ent back to the mine ths next day to help ith the picketing, I helped with this for about 30 days and then got a job with ages pre gi "I voted in the first ™.L.R.8. election as I had a right to do this and intended at the time to go back to vork at mine "BY. As I remember this election it was fair and honest, The balloting was by secrect ballot and no one tried to influence me to vote one way or the { hen the mine opened in Dec, 1939 I went back and worked one day then quite. I ouite end went to work at the Virden Mine which is a P.M.A. mine, I am still a P,?'.A. member. I quite the mine "E" because i had another job at the Virden Mince and felt I would rather work there. —— + 327 =
