RE: JOHN L. LEVIS, ET AL INTERVIEY WITH e following investigation was conducted by Special Agents a cot QNRMINMNNY 2° Sprinctielé, T11- nois, on September 6b, . Arents at about 7:00 p.m. went to the residence of as =. Springfield, Illinois, and identified mselves an explainec to him @ urpose of their mission. He advised that he did not know anything about the matter. He was then asked if he would wish to answer some questions end he was told that if he did not imow the answers he should £0 advise. said voluntarily thet he would answer the questions. He also said he never had been arrested. BE sncvercs & portion of the questions as will be reflected in the stetement, and when questioned whether or not he had gone out to Mine "B" at any time while the men of the PkiA were there on a sit down strike, he said he aid not kmow anything about the strike, end that he should not have talked at ell in the first plase. He was then esked if he had been contacted by any~ one in regard to this investigetion, and he denied being contacted. He was then told that he need not answer any further questions and that Agents would depart. , Before leaving he was requested to read over the statement which he had furnished up to that time. He did so, and when he came to the part of the stxtement where he sid that he should not heve talked he leughed and suid he did not think Agents would write thet part down. He was told that Sgents wrote down just wheat he had said and he was esked if what wes written down was not el] true just as he had eaid it. He told agents it wee written down just like he hed said end that it was true. After finishing reading the et‘ tement he agcin told 4gents it was just what he hed said and that it was ell true. He was asked if he would tell Agents who had contacted him end told him not to trik cbout this investigation. This he refused to do; how- ever, at this time he did not deny thet he hed been contacted. The following unsigned statement was obteined fron Qe 5 gumeer 7: Sept. 8, 1943. "I ive this free and voluntary stetement to & who heve identified thenselves es being neckal agents of the F.8.1. to me. No force or threats have been used to give this statement.
