ANTERVIE WITH Mine during the sit down strike, and stayed out there
a ye part of the time. JI was not working there on the day
continue that the sit down strike started, and do not know what
happened. I stayed out there part of the time. The
men who were there on the sit down were all men who had worked at Mine B
before, as far as I know.
wT recall voting at an election for the unions in the winter of
1937. As far as I know that was a fair election. No one told me how to
vote, or tried to influence my vote in any way. As far as I know
everyone had a chance to vote as they wanted to at that election.
*I do not recall exactly when I went to work at the Jefferson
mine. a a eel was working out there, and he got me a job. I
worked ou ere about 11 months. It was a UM’ mine, and so I joined the
UMW when I went to work out there. When that mine closed I had my card
switched over to the Mine B local of the UMW. I did not care particularly
which union I belonged te then.
"I went back to work timbering when the mine reopened. There had
‘been no big fires in the mine during the time that it was closed.
"There had been some big cave ins, and they have not been cleaned
up yet, in the south part. Some I helped to clean up myself.
"Fy knew when he worked cut there at mine B. He
was an Air Check man, or Something like that. I went around testing air.
He had not worked at Mine B before the strike. Before the strike there
had been a man checking the air part of the time, and working on other
We called hin When the mine came back, after the strike,
came back and contin to do the same Sort of work that he did
eft, no one
there doing
was hired to do that
the same sort of thing.
"J heard that there was fishting going on at the mine after it
reopened. I was not interested in the tings that happened out there,
and did not see any fights. I was a member of the UMW and did not try
to do any organizing or anything like that. I do not know of any
organizing that was being done out there at the mine during that time.
an "T do not recall Falcetti or Elshoff saying anything about
either union, or which one they preferred. I did not see any papers
handed out anywhere on the mine property. I do not recall signing any
papers or petitions after the mine went out on strike. |
