No threats or violence were used acninst me.
"after L started back to work, a man knowm ot,
another know a came to me in the mine about mice a 3» and
asked me why I did not join the U.M.W. union. They said that everyone
else in the mine was poine to sim up, an! that I wonld lose my job if
I did not sign up. During this tine I don't remember that the manare~
ment ever expressed an opinien as to which union they preferred.
"In the election of February 1941 I voted for the U.Mea. at
this tine Iwas nwt a member of the U.M.V, I voted for the U.M.T. because
the men that I have mentioned before in this statement had told me at
one tine or another that if the P.M.A. won the election, the mins would
shut dom again because the manacement had said they would shut down in
that event. I did not want to lose my job so I voted for the U.M.W.
SPretor to tho strike in 1937 I don't romember any employ who
had the job of “air checker" but after the mine opencd up in 1939 the man
known as ae: such a job. He had no particular duties, an? I
think that he was merely organizing for U.M.W. There were a couple of other
jobs like this but I don't roeall who hele them.

*T oannot estimate the cost that was involved in reopenine the
mine. I don't remember big fires after the mina opened up.
"Many of the miners are of the opinion that John L. Lewis mas |
givinr momey to Carl Elshoff during the time the mine was shut dow. I,
like the rest of the miners, think that lewis cave Elshoff money to
live on and to keep the mine in condition so that it coulc be reoponed
some day when the U.H.. had tho majority of the miners. TI don't know
where these iceas came fron, but most of the miners had thon.
"This statoment consist three other typewritten
