I start Pi. workod there until the strike in 1937. I was a member of the U.N... until about 1932 when the Progressive Union was formed. Everyone told mo that if I jcined the Progressive the ducs would be smaller and working conditions would bc better. As far as I wes conoerned the working conditions under the Progressive union didn't soem to be any better and it cost more in dues. Since I never talked to any company officials I cannot say anything as to how the company felt about the unions. I never held a union office and didn't go to hardly any moctings. I do not know anything about events lead~ ing up to the strike in hiay of 1937 and didn't know a atrike was coming until the day of the actual strike. t ®2t about one ofclock in the afternoon on Kay 12, 1937, one of the drivers told me thet I had enough cars for tho day end for me to go home. “hen I got on top I was told thet the mine was shut down and for me not to come back.
