owner, since the experience in the state had indicated that the UMW contract —
was much better than a PUY contract, inasmuch as a grester volume of business —
was possible, more valuable contacts were made, and more permanent plans
eoulé be formulated in consideration of the nation-wide character of the
union. RYDER f.rther stated that to him a specific evidence of the pro-UMW
attitude was the fact thet the owner of the "5" Mine had never consented to.
a closed shop when dealing with PMW, but had immediately consented to a |
closed shop when the UMW held control following ths last election. RYDBB?:
said that, in consideration of the belligerent faction nature of the neigh-
borhood around "B” Mine, an open shop was, in effect, so strong agent for the
UMW, for it allowed their strong militant and hichly organized minority to
propagandize more than the less organized majority of PMW. &' further
claimed that, from his observation of the general attitude in the "8" Mine
district, he felt that duress and every other method of obtaining UMW votes
was used, although he had not been eble to obtain specific evidence during
his investigation.
RYDER stated that he had no knowledge of any financial arrangements
between "5B" Mine, ELSHOFF, end the UMW, nor had he ever heard of the transfer
of any funds among them. He stated that the only money he had ever heard
involved in the dispute was at the time of the death of 4 Progressive Mine
Worker, when a representation of United Mine Workers appeared at the wake
and rave a $200 check to the widow. This type of perfectly legal propaganda,
RYDER advised, was extremely powerful, inasmuch as at the time the PNW were
unable to pay any of their death benefits.
