Should handwriting comparisons be requested, known handwriting, both dictated and undictated, should be obtained from anyone suspected of having written the questioned handwriting. The known handwriting should be comparable with the questioned handwriting in wording, format and writing style. In obtaining dictated handwriting exemplars the individual should not be allowed to view the questioned handwriting and each specimen should be removed from the view of the writer upon completion. Undictated exemplars consist of handwriting prepared during normal course of business activity. A sufficient amount of known handwriting should be obtained so that the normal range of variation in the individual’s handwriting can be observed. PAPER EXAMINATIONS Postage Stamp The twenty-nine cent postage stamp on Q1 was removed from a sheet of stamps. Indented Writing/Watermark Indented writing of undetermined value was observed on specimen Q2. A photograph depicting the enhanced indented writing is enclosed. Also enclosed is a photocopy of a partial transcription of the indented writing. No watermark or other physical characteristics were observed on Q1 or Q2 which would further assist in determining their immediate origin. Remarks: Specimens Q1 and Q2 were searched in the appropriate sections of the Anonymous Letter File without effecting an identification. Representative copies of these specimens will be added to this file for future reference. The results of the requested latent fingerprint examinations and the disposition of the submitted evidence will be subjects of a separate report. Photographs are retained by the Laboratory.
