Marvin Watson advised DeLoach at approximately 2:20 p.m.
| today, 8-12-65, that the USIA Director Marks, had called him a few minutes

Marks stated that in conversation with the President and Watson he had not
‘meant to infer that the FBI had “leaked” any information. Marks told Watson
that the entire matter was settled--that Chancellor was now cleared and there
would be no further difficulty. ,
Watson told me that under the circumstances we should not
make any further inquiries. He stated that both he and the President were
Satisfied, that the FBI had handled this matter in good fashion and there had
been no "leaks." I told Watson that we had checked very carefully and had
deter mined that none of our people had given any information relative
_ to Chancellor's morals. I further told him that following his approval we had
~ pinned down this morning and that had unequivocally denied
that he had received any information from the FBI. I told Watson that
had further denied that he had told Marks that he had received information from
the FBI. I mentioned that under the circumstances it definitely and conclusively
was proven that the FBI was not responsible for any so-called "leaks."
. Watson stated that he agreed and would so advise the President.
